Active in the ASIC design industry, HMT is the eldest, and one of the largest, independent contract ASIC design houses in Europe. Since the foundation in 1978 as a spin-off of the Swiss watch industry, over 500 ASIC developments have entered into series production.
In today’s automated world, sensors and actuators developed by HMT are present in every market segment: from industrial to automotive, medical and aeronautic.
1.1 Speciality
HMT specialises in “mixed signal” ASICs, modules and microelectronic systems, particularly for sensors and actuators. In these devices the analogue elements meet the digital directly, in tough and varied environments such as industrial, aeronautic, automotive and medical. Our customers are under intense pressure to reduce cost and physical size, while extracting increased performance with minimal power consumption, often in electronically harsh environments. The only way forward is through integration, squeezing as many elements as possible, both analogue and digital, onto one device. HMT provides the unique cross-domain skill set required to meet these needs. Of course, analogue meets digital elsewhere as well, from timers to telecomms, from power supplies to piezo drivers. HMT is pleased to serve and is proud to have served customers in this wide range of applications and backgrounds.
A fundamental differentiator is HMT’s unique solution to integrated protections, such as surge and zero current reverse polarity protection in line driver applications. These protections are combined on the same silicon as analogue, low consumption and high resolution circuits.

1.3 Business
HMT is a “fabless” producer of ICs, electronic modules & systems and design services developing, qualifying, industrialising and delivering these products over a long term relationship to our customers. Production test and final delivery operations are generally carried out at HMT and HMT remains responsible to the customer for the total design and product fabrication in all cases.
This approach allows HMT to support a specialised and focussed design team, and additionally to select the most appropriate technology for each customer from a palette of providers.
As a design service and product supplier company, HMT acts as a ‘One-Stop-Shop’ for low to medium annual volumes, from several tens of thousands to several millions of devices. For ICs the minimum annual volume after ramp-up is given by volume of one wafer lot per year.
1.4 Customers
Our customers are distinguished by their variety, from small manufacturers to household names, european and world-wide, in industrial, automotive, aeronautic and medical arenas. Production ranges from 2 wafers per year (some thousands of devices) up to many wafer lots per year (millions of devices). We have positioned ourselves to provide packaged ASIC knowledge, supporting customers with little or no ASIC and module experience, while at the same time we are proud to be selected by major semiconductor manufactures to assist in their own developments.
